The last thing that any homeowner wants to experience as we get into these cold winter months is a furnace that suddenly decides to go out. But barring the inconvenience caused by such an event, there are other issues at hand that may necessitate not only a service call but an emergency phone call at that. Fortunately, most HVAC companies have 24-hour emergency HVAC services standing by that can address your situation in the middle of the night, on the weekend, or even during holidays.

When it comes to your furnace, there are a few things to look out for that should tell you your furnace needs to be fixed as soon as possible. If you see any of them on this list, contact an HVAC company immediately.

Burning Smells

The first time you turn on your furnace for the winter, you should experience a mild burning smell in your house for a couple of hours. If you have anybody in your home with breathing or allergy issues, make sure they're out of the house while this happens. If the smell lingers or happens continuously while your furnace is on, it could be excessive grime and dirt on your fan blades causing your unit to work harder than necessary. The burning smell could also be an electrical issue, which poses a threat not only to your furnace but possibly to your home and family as well, The only way to know what's causing it is to contact an emergency HVAC service and have them look at it.

Strange Noises

Any kind of strange noises that radiate throughout your house while your furnace is on need to be addressed. The clanking sound may be something as small as a bolt that has fallen off and is rattling around inside your ductwork, but a screeching or scraping, metal-on-metal sound can be indicative of a fan blade that is dislodged and is scraping the inside of your furnace. These need to be addressed sooner rather than later so that they don't cause irreparable damage to your furnace and require replacement.

Unit Not Turning On

Since the primary function of a furnace is to heat your home, it needs to be looked at if it's not even operating correctly. Aside from the fact that it will be cold, a home that is not regulated temperature-wise can also cause significant damage, as pipes or framing can contract and possibly break. First, check the breaker to make sure it hasn't been flipped, then make sure your thermostat is on. If neither of these is the culprit, contact your local HVAC company to schedule emergency services right away.
