Refrigerants are chemicals that are comprised of compressed gasses in liquid form. There are several appliances that use refrigerants, and all are important pieces of equipment in maintaining comfort and food safety where people are concerned. Only an HVAC contractor/technician can handle these refrigerants too. Here are four appliances that use refrigerants, and why only the HVAC pro is allowed to handle them.

The Family Refrigerator

That refrigerator standing in your kitchen is definitely in HVAC refrigerant territory. A lot of people think that some random appliance technician shows up to fix a refrigerator, but really it is an HVAC technician. He/she will always check the refrigerant levels in the evaporator coils before proceeding to check for other issues.

Chest Freezers and Upright Freezers

A lot of families have additional freezer storage because most refrigerators lack the necessary space to store large amounts of groceries. These upright and chest freezers also rely on refrigerant in their coils to freeze and keep food cold. Their mechanical structures for the use of refrigerant, as well as the type of refrigerant they require, are a little different from refrigerant and mechanical structure in a refrigerator/freezer appliance.

Air Conditioners

Air conditioners, particularly central air conditioners, use refrigerant as well. They use one of three specific refrigerants that are, for all intents and purposes, environmentally safe. If they were to leak onto the ground, it would be less hazardous to the environment than some of the other commercial refrigerants used in other appliances.

Commercial Walk-in Coolers and Freezers

Walk-ins are commonly used in the restaurant business sector, but they may also be used in research labs and butcher shops or meat processing plants. Walk-in freezers are constructed the same, but are essentially much, much colder because they are required to freeze and store entire sides of beef, pork, etc.. Both of these massive walk-in commercial appliances use heftier amounts of different types of refrigerants to keep food cold and frozen.

Why the HVAC Pro Is the Only One That Can Handle Refrigerants

The HVAC professional is the only one that can handle refrigerants, apart from the companies that make the refrigerants and sell them. You have to have special training and a license to handle refrigerants because of how dangerous they can be. They are so cold that some of them can "burn" holes in your flesh if they accidentally drip on your skin, and you definitely do not want them anywhere near your face. That is why only the HVAC pro can handle, transport, fill, refill/recharge, and repair all of the previously mentioned cooling appliances.
