If you live in an older home, chances are the electrical wiring is older too. It is important that you keep the electrical wiring updated, however, as old, and outdated wiring could result in an electric house fire. One thing you need to check is your electrical panel. Once it gets past a certain age, it needs to be upgraded so it can handle the electric power in your home. Below is more information about this so you will know when it is time for you to call all electrician:

Remodeling

If you are planning to remodel your home and add new appliances, lights, electrical outlets, etc., you will need to upgrade your electrical panel. This is because the current circuit breakers likely do not have enough voltage to handle the newly added items.

When appliances or other devices are plugged in, the power from the appliances or devices flows through its corresponding circuit breaker. The circuit breaker can only handle so much amperage. If you plug in too many items that go to that circuit breaker the circuit breaker will automatically power off. It does this for safety purposes as if it did not turn off it would cause a fire.

A way to fix this problem is to replace the current circuit breakers with circuit breakers that can handle more amperage.

Unusual Electrical Problems

If you notice unusual electrical problems in your home, such as flicking lights, reduced intermittent power, electrical outlets stop working, etc., this is a sign your electrical plan needs to be upgraded. The wiring may be defective, or the breakers may have a loose connection. Wires could also be defective, fraying, or completely burned out.

You may have some electrical outlets that work and others do not, or you may lose power in only some of the rooms in your home.  Because there is more than one electrical problem at the same time the problem is likely coming from the electrical panel.

Must Use Extension Cords and Power Strips

If you find that you must use extension cords and power strips because you do not have enough electrical outlets in your home, you should upgrade the electrical panel. Overloaded extension cords or power strips are a fire hazard. Along with upgrading the electrical panel you also need to install enough electrical outlets for what you need to plug in.
